This is the post that has been written and re-written in my head more times that I care to share. Its time to get it off my chest in some small way.
When my son was an infant, I labelled him serious. It was difficult to get him to smile, laugh, make eye contact. He seemed to be developing normally otherwise. I figured his personality would be more like mine; quiet until he was comfortable, then goofy when he trusted you. I was pretty much on cue with that. He seemed to learn things fast. I thought he was a genius at eighteen months because he was reading along with me, counting, lining his red cars in a perfect row from smallest to largest.
He hit two and I braced myself. I was waiting for something terrible to happen that never really did. Sure he had tantrums but not anything monumental. I could handle them. He was given time outs in his room because he wouldn't sit on the floor. He didn't understand that he had to stay in one place. No big deal, he went to his room.
Three hit and I started to worry about school. His vocabulary seemed to have stalled. We were not having two way conversations that most kids at that age were having with their Mom. I brushed it off. School was more than a year away and in a year there is a ton of development.
Three was not fun. And by not fun, I mean it didn't think I was going to survive. We had wild tantrums in the street. Hair was pulled, arms were bitten, shins were kicked. No communication as to why it was happening, but I could gauge pretty accurately from external cues what was going to set him off. Not walking in the direction that he wanted to walk in, a different bedtime routine, his brother taking his toy, leaving a location he wasn't ready to leave. All sound normal for a toddler who is desperately trying to control his world. What I also noticed was my huge inabilities to reach him during those meltdowns. I couldn't soothe him, I couldn't explain why we were doing what we were doing in a way that he understood or accepted. I couldn't get him to look at me, I couldn't soothe him when he hurt himself, I couldn't break his attention away from the repetitive play that he was involved in. I knew something was there but I wasn't sure what. I always saw my Sister looking at my at different times with questions in her eyes but she never asked the question because she knew I wasn't ready to give her an answer.
On the night of his fourth birthday he was in his room, standing on the rail of his brothers crib and jumping off of it onto his bed. There was no fear there, no comprehension that he could hurt himself He never understood danger. My Sister was in the room and gently asked me if I thought something was there. I started to cry and say yes I think there may be something wrong. I cried because I knew she saw what I was seeing but never once used the words different or wrong. She used the words special. I had seen her watch him over the years and I knew she saw the same things I did.
At his four year old check up his pediatrician watched him and listen to what I had to say about his development. He made a referral to a specialist that deals with developmental and attention disorders. I remember sitting in the specialist office, willing myself not to cry but looking for a little bit of validation that I wasn't going crazy, that maybe my son needed some extra help. He put his pen down, looked at me and said, " Mom, what do you think is wrong?" The tears came because it was my opportunity to get a little validation. I had gone online and done some research. I had nailed down some of his behaviors and attributed them to something on the Autism spectrum. He listen to me, let me cry, and redirected my thoughts. He felt that it was possibly Aspergers or a Pervasive Development Disorder. He immediately put in a referral to OCTC for a physiological assessment to determine the root cause of M`s development delays.
I have cried A LOT over the past year for many reasons. I don't want my son to be labelled. I don't like it when people tell me that Aspergers is the excuse de jours for behavioral problems with children. I don't like it when people tell me that it will be really unfortunate if he doesn't have anything wrong with him and that I have taken it to the level that I have because now all of this will be in his school file. I don't like it when someone who is supposed to love us sticks their head in the sand and avoids the issues. I don't like being the only one to advocate for my child. I don't like feeling alone.
He had his first appointment at OCTC today. Not with a psychologist but with some different therapist that could recommenced strategies to help him during the long wait for his assessment. The resources that they will provide is astounding. Speech therapy, dietitians, social workers, occupational therapists. Nothing short of amazing. I`m taking what ever I can get with no pride getting in the way. He deserves everything, this kid of mine. All I really want for him are the tools that he needs to grow and succeed. I don't need my child to be a doctor or lawyer. I will never put that sort of pressure on him. I am not the competitive Mom that has their child enrolled in so many activities that they forget what it is to just play. I have walked away from different opportunities for myself over the past year because the timing is wrong. I put myself on the back burner frequently because that is what I believe I should do. He needs me to advocate for him and that is what I plan to do.
Love you kiddo.
“So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember
that life's A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will,
indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you'll move mountains.”
― Dr. Seuss
Two boys, a tornado of tantrums, and some scrap thrown in for good measure. I'll take this life over sanity any day of the week.

It was one of those days...
One hour into our day it started.
The hitting, biting, the throwing of toys.
The pushing, the shoving, the screaming.
It was not a day I wanted to be a part of.
It was not one of my finer moments in parenting.
M was in his room twice today.
After the second time I vowed to give all of us some space.
So I did what I don't normally do and let him play on a different floor than J and myself for a good portion of the afternoon.
It was slightly peaceful, but M was still tired, and cranky, possessive and unkind, that it still made the afternoon difficult.
I tried for 4 hours to get him outside for a walk, but he was having none of it, Until 1 hour before dinner.
Of course.
So out we went for a walk around the block.
The sun was just setting and both of them looked so stinkin' cute waddling in their heavy snowsuits.
The air did all of us some good.
Until bedtime...
Then it all went to the pooper again.
M is going through some sort of Idontwanttogotobedrightnow phase.
Paired with MommyMommyMommyyoumustliebesidemewhileItrytosleep phase.
Every. Night.
I'm tired of the drama at bedtime.
The scolding at bedtime.
The raised voice at bedtime.
The complete frustration at bedtime.
Tired.
As I lay there with him watching him fall asleep tonight I wondered about a few dozen things.
Is he scared?
Does he know I love him to the moon and back?
Is he trying to one up me?
Is this a power/control issue?
What the beep am I doing wrong?
Giving in?
Loving him to much?
Not enough?
Not spending enough time with him?
Spending too much time with him?
I was a Mother I didn't want to be today.
The mother that scolded to much, raised her voice to much.
I made a conscious decision to let technology go today with a few minor updates here and there.
I didn't craft,
I didn't shower,
I didn't do dishes.
I didn't make dinner, and opted for leftovers paired with nuggets and fries.
I tried to be present.
I just don't think I did a very good job of it today.

It shouldn't really come as a suprise....
...that when I have been at work more than home for a stretch that it upsets The Bigs.
What I find especially pleasing (and by pleasing I really mean it makes me want to poke my own eyeballs out) is when M feels the need to bully his brother in order to monopolize my attention.
Fun. Times.
He knows when he is doing it, and can he ever turn on the charm or puppy dog eyes when he knows he has done something really unsavoury, like biting his brothers fingers and breaking the skin.....
Today he looked up at me and whispered "I love you too, Mummy" right after a particular event in the kitchen pantry.
Yep, I love you too kiddo.
Love you to the moon.
But please, please, please stop with the bitting, hitting, kicking and general roughhousing of any living thing.
.
.
.
And just because I want to remember his charm, (like I would forget it) A little LO I did today using one of Becky Fleck's sketches from her PageMap2 book.
Enjoy your week!!

My nightly boomerang
After nearly four years of sleep deprivation I am happy to report that my littlest is edging towards uninterrupted slumber.
I have been waiting for this moment for... well for 4 years.
You see, when I became pregnant with my biggest I instantly couldn't sleep anymore.
I would be awake for hours on end in the night, only to start feeling sleepy when it was time to get up for work.
I was miserable.
My biggest bundle of joy didn't start sleeping through the night until he was 16 months old.
Ironically it was the exact date that I found out that I was pregnant with him.
I was already two weeks pregnant with baby J and had completely resigned myself that I was never to sleep again.
Gone were sacred Sundays spent on the couch, in PJ's, watching Nascar with hubs.
Gone were the days where I would wake from my nightly slumber, eat breakfast and go right back to bed.
Oh naps, how I have missed you.
Now naps entail either sleeping with one of them or both of them.
Nice but not quite the same as the pre kid nap.
Now one of them so much as sighs in their sleep, and my spidey senses tingle and I shoot out of bed.
I'm pretty sure I haven't had REM sleep in years.
Which is why I am pretty darned happy about J reaching this milestone.
Or I was.
Until SOMEONE rained on my parade.
SOMEONE has decide that he now needs extra attention in the night, even though SOMEONE has been sleeping through the night for 2 years.
SOMEONE will not go to sleep at night anymore unless he has had a proper cuddle with Mommy and Daddy, In our bed, with all of his lovies, and his water cup.
SOMEONE has superior delay tactics that entail bathroom trips, whereby there is actual tinkle...hard to disregard that one since we just finished training.
SOMEONE 'S favorite tactic is running back and forth between his room and our room, laying in bed with us until he is tired, then makes his way back to where he started.
A boomerang if you will.
This boomerang child will go back and forth some 5 times.
Sometimes each interval lasts 20 minutes.
Sometimes he isn't getting to bed until 10pm...way too late.
Sometimes I want to lock him up in his room with the door knob thingies that I used to used but removed because I love a good cuddle.
IN. THE. MORNING.
I'm pooped.
I need my sleep.
He needs his sleep.
Never have I looked more forward to daylight savings to try and trick his internal clock into going to bed sooner.
That boomerang needs to find his way back into his bed...at 7:30.
Just like the good ole days.
So I can enjoy some ZZZZZZZZZ's
Nighty Night.

Some childrens parents...
Let me start off by saying I am not trying to stir the pot, only trying to put my feelings out there into cyber-land.
If you read yesterdays post you may know that M and I got off to a bad start, which resulted in some discipline on our street.
I was not proud of the swat on the bum, especially when you are trying to teach a young person to be kind to others.
Yesterday though I felt like I had explored all my options in the 10 minutes that we were engaged in a battle of the wills.
Here is the thing;
I'm not afraid to discipline my child, in public or otherwise.
I was disciplined as a child, and I won't go into the details of my Fathers military like discipline measures, but suffice to say that they were somewhat cruel and unusual.
I will never, ever while I am on the face of this earth do anything that extreme to my child.
But a swat on a bum?
.
.
.
The reason that I bring this up is this;
Today while playing at the local water park, in all of five minutes I was annoyed by the behavior of some of the kids that should know better, and more so of the adults who blatantly stood by and watched their children push and shove their way through the water.
The kid that tried to push my 14 month old and looked up at me to see if I was watching?
I wanted to do more than spank his bum.
His mother that stood there and watched him do it?
Well I wanted to do a little more than that.
After 4 issues with pushing, shoving, hitting in 20 minutes I hightailed it out of there.
Am I being to harsh? Overprotective of my kids?
Maybe.
But here is a thought.
Why is it that there are so many insolent little kids/teenagers and young adults out there today?
Why are they so mean? Rude? Ignorant?
Is it because their parent didn't show them the way and discipline them when necessary?
Did they give them the toy they wanted in order to squash the temper tantrum?
Did they feel that their parents were so strict and harsh in their punishments that they vowed never to be like them and as a result are raising bullies?
BLAH!!!!
Heavy topic for tonight.
One that I am not necessarily looking for answers on.
Because I know we are not all perfect and that is what makes this great big world of ours spin.
I just wanted to vent.

Worried
J seems to have more allergies than he was first tested for.
More skin prick tests and blood tests next week.
I find the entire thing very overwhelming.
Foods that I can't give him,
Worrying that something might happen while I am at work.
My mind wanders to worst case scenerios and I keep talking myself down off the ledge.
It is hard to see him in distress with itchy hives,
Hard to see that he is not sleeping well.
Constantly listening for breathing issues.
He is a trooper, usually in a good mood,
But I can't help but wonder if he could speak, what he might say about how he is feeling.
I hope and pray that it is nothing more than a food allergy.
Wish us luck.

Mixed emotions.
I am so very fortunate to live in a country that allows an entire year of Maternity Leave.
It also just happened that I had 5 weeks of vacation that had to be taken before I left to have J.
As of today I have been off for one year and 2 weeks.
So very lucky, I am.
Which is why the cloud that loomed over today was unwelcomed.
I met my new boss today for lunch to discuss my return and had some interesting options put on the table.
At first I thought I would return to my old position, but after hearing him out, and weighing the pros and cons offered, I took a lesser stressful store.
Same money, an assistant who has my back, and less stress. I would be silly to turn that down right?
I feel good with my decision, but as I pulled out of the parking lot of the restaurant the tears started to fall from my eyes.
On my own accord I agreed to go back one week early.
He didn't ask, I offered.
I have my reasons.
But I feel a little like a traitor.
It will be one week that I won't be home with my babies and it may not seem like a big deal but I was so overcome with emotion.
I tried really hard to keep my tears in check but as soon as I walked in the house and heard their voices they started to fall even harder.
I remember all to well that feeling in the pit of my tummy, leaving every morning, and the sheer panic that set in at 5:00pm when I knew I had to get on the road home.
I would grip the steering wheel so hard I had white knuckles.
I hated that feeling.
Eventually it subsided and going to work got easier.
Maybe it was because I only had one babe at home.
Maybe it was that I became pregnant within 4 months of returning to work and I knew I would be home for a year again.
For what ever reason I felt better about being a working Mom.
But right now I feel like I'm ripping my kids off of one week.
I especially feel that way for J.
As hard as I try to make sure he gets the same attention as M, I know it just wasn't the same.
M had more time with me in his first year because I had to take my vacation at the end of my first Matt Leave and then he had me for 5 weeks all alone before J was born.
J will not be nursed as long, frankly I will be suprised if I make it through the next two weeks.
J didn't get two maternity leaves and he never will; there will be no more babies born from me.
I just feel like he is getting the shit end of the stick.
And how will M adjust after having me home for more than 2/3rds of his life?
It really is hurting my heart.
I hate that I have to work.
But I know that I do it for them, you know, so we don't have to live in the slums...
I'll get through it, because that is what I do, but man alive I am going to miss my boys.
Thats's all for tonights pity party.

I'm his.
As soon as I opened M's door this morning he said: "There's my Mommy!".
This was the first time he has refered to me as his, in the right context.
It made my heart all warm and fuzzy.
Now I am just waiting for the possessiveness to start in other areas.
Can you just hear the cries: "THAT'S MY TOY!!!!"
Can't wait...
In other breaking news, J had some allergy testing done yesterday after some hive issues after introducing milk.
He is deffinately allergic to milk.
And...
Peanuts.
Greeeeeaaaaaaaaattttt.
I wasn't thrilled to hear this news.
We are the proud new owners of an epipen.
We have to take him for a blood test to determine the degree or severity of the allergy.
The Dr. felt that it wasn't severe but it has to be treat as such until he is 5, at which time a "Peanut Challenge" will occur.
For the time being this also means that M will not have any peanut butter or foods that may contain, as he may contaminate J accidently.
I don't think he will miss it. He is more of a honey on toast kind of kid.
But I will need to be more careful, as will B.
I will become a label reader at the grocery store.
It was also communicated to us that he has a 75% chance of developing asthma because of these allergies, combined with his diminishing excema.
Ugh.
My head and heart are telling me they are not serious allergies and that he will outgrow the milk allergy by 2 and the peanut allergy by 5.
I already bought some soy milk this morning and J drank 3 ounces.
YAY!!!
Let the weening begin!
Off to watch the WonderPets with the turkey and the monkey.
And to read my Flyers. ;)
Have a great weekend.

Calling a spade a spade
Have you ever been in a situation where someone made a comment about you, your husband, your child or a friend that was subtle in design but was so obvious to you that it could have been an elephant standing in the room?
I feel like I am on the receiving end of those comments more often than I would like to be and I don't get it.
Maybe I have "walk all over me" written on my forehead.
Or maybe it is that I am so easy to read that the person that so graciously extended the comment knew I wouldn't respond.
Boy, are they wrong if they don't think I respond because if they had a ticket to the sold out show inside my mind would they be surprised.
I can unleash a world of misery without even opening my mouth.
Which is why I don't; I don't trust the words that may come cascading from my tongue.
History tells me that they are going to hurt.
And I am a huge believer in picking my battles, being the bigger person, leading by example...blah, blah, blah.
I don't always want to be that person; I want to tell someone who overstepped their boundaries of our "friendship" that they have done just that.
But how?
I don't struggle with this in my professional life, and that may be because I don't have a choice.
When you lead people you need to make your expectations clear from day one.
When people fail, or become misguided, you probe, use self discovery, coach, redirect, get commitments, follow up...I could go on and on.
Should I be doing that in my personal life?
Do I need to interview people to make sure they are suitable candidates for my friendship?
Do I just need to "cut them out" as Phoebe likes to say, if they are not holding up their end of the friendship?
I'm not good at calling people out on their BS even though my radar is tuned into their BS frequency.
There has to be some sort of middle ground for me and I am struggling to find it.
And for the record....he butted in line, he's not "a really, really fast runner."
That is why he went ahead of your child on the slide.
Because he butted in line.
And yes I saw it, however if you would have given me the 10 seconds to respond, I would have been able to address the issue with him directly.
So in the future, please try to parent your own child and let me parent mine.

Spring Forward
Do you have a hate on for Daylight Savings Time like I do?
I really don't understand why we have to mess with the time.
It never really used to bother me untill I had kids.
Now I obsess about it.
Usually because it messes with bedtime.
There is no way M is going to go to bed tomorrow at seven.
Because it is really six.
He will sit in his room, which will have light filtering in through the drapes and wonder what the heck he did to deserve being banished to his room so early in the evening.
It will probably take him two hours to fall asleep.
And then the next morning, he will wake at 5:00am, which is really 4:00 am.
Why?
Because M is shifty that way.
It's like he is trying to get back at us for sending him to bed early.
And even if I try to skip the afternoon nap, he still knows we are messing with time.
He doesn't give a rats behind about Day Light Savings Time.
He just wants to get on with his day at his normal scheduled time.
Which I'm not sure if you caught that 7 sentances ago, but that would be five frickin A.M.
*sigh*
So tomorrow and the next day, and probably the day after that, I will have cranky crankerson on my hands because he will be slightly sleep deprived.
It will be interesting to see how J adjusts.

OOPS...
I left my paper trimmer out today.
I usually remove the blade and tuck it high out of little fingers reach.
I forgot to today.
BIG Mommy fail.
Someone gashed his finger pretty good.
It took over 30 minutes to stop the bleeding.
Guilt.
Guilt.
More guilt.
I ate too much chocolate to compensate for my guilt.
Which mad me feel even more guilty.
BLAH!

Facebook fail
When I first set up my Facebook account 2 1/2 years ago, I set my privacy settings high.
The reason at the time was due to a strict work policy.
Basically it was found out that people who worked for our company were creating fan pages and using the company’s logo on the site, which was a huge breach of their privacy agreement that every employee signs upon hire.
And on these pages they created they were talking smack (did I really just type that?) about the company and some of the management team.
The company didn't take it lightly and some employees were terminated.
The other reason was I wasn't sure if I wanted people working for me seeing things about my private life.
I had some employees send me requests and I felt very uncomfortable accepting them.
So I didn't.
I made myself invisible.
Only I could add you as a friend.
It was a little lonely.
Gone were those days where you would log in and see a friend request waiting for you.
The excitement of someone from your past wanting to catch up with you was gone.
So I un-stealthed myself and changed my name to one that wasn't so familiar.
If you know me, and know me well, you know that my first and last name together have been used as a 2 syllable nickname for years.
So I took B's last name and Viola, I am back in business.
Until tonight.
I still don't get many friend requests, and that's okay.
There is something to be said about that saying why people from your past didn't make it to your future...
I didn't like the friend request I got tonight.
I don't understand how after almost 20 years he could have found me.
And then I perused my friend list and saw two possibilities.
Crap.
My quasi-anonymity is gone.
I know that it is silly to be angry that he found me probably by riffling through their friends list but still.
My profile picture doesn't even look like me....Unless overnight I turned into a pair of red mittens.
I feel a little hypocritical venting like this for basically the entire world to read but I still feel slightly anonymous.
But what if he reads this blog?
I don't want him here, (I DON"T WANT YOU HERE!) learning about my life, my kids, my friends, my family, my hobby.
I don't.
But I am also not willing to give this or Facebook up, because they are my two minute Mommy time out breaks when I need them.
And I do need them.
I just wish that Facebook didn't give me up.
Now if it were MarK Ruffalo sending a request I might feel differently.
And now my other secret is out.
My movie star crush is Mark Ruffalo.
Worse things could happen right?

A word on manners
I was brought up to mind my P's and Q's.
We excused ourselves from the dinner table.
We ate what was placed in front of us.
We didn't speak to grownups unless spoken to.
It was a bit of a tight ship.
Manners are important.
It tickles me that M now asks for things prefaced by "please."
And when he doesn't want something he will say "no thank you".
Mind you sometimes if he really doesn't want it he will scream it.
Manners are the reason why I don't like most people.
Or I should say lack there of.
I really didn't appreciate the lady at Costco this a.m. who felt that she had paid her dues and therefore should be able to charge through the crowd with her shopping cart without so much as a blink of an eye when she nearly ran down me and my son.
So I offered up these words to her:
"I believe the words that you are looking for are, pardon me and I'm sorry"
This snide remark was rewarded with a dirty look to which I gave her my best stare down.
I've got at least 2o years on you lady...don't push my sleep deprived buttons.
Here's the thing.
She couldn't have been brought up that way could she have been?
Surely she knows what she did was wrong, does she not?
It can't possibly be that she feels such a sense of entitlemnet to that particular ilse space that she would actually plow down bystanders.
Right?
I'm so glad I'm bringing my kids up in this world.
*sigh*
This is why I don't like most people.
And just because I don't want to leave you thinking I'm all snarky today a pic of the boys in their christmas sweaters made by Grammy H.

Sleep
If there is one thing that Moms obsess over more than anything else, it is sleep.
Either that their child doesn't nap long enough,
Doesn't go to sleep on their own,
Wakes in the night...
I 'm sure we could all make a mountain of a list citing all the grievances we have with sleep issues.
And you probably have a mountain of resources citing the many techniques used to get your babies to sleep.
Unless of course you are one of *those* who has a baby that has slept through the night since 6 weeks...and is a good napper.
If you are that Mama...you are lucky.
I'm not that Mama.
M woke every two hours until he was 11 months. It then filtered down to once or twice a night.
Then magically at 16 months he slept through the night.
I tried letting him cry it out.
He and I were both not cut out for it.
I include him in this equation because instead of the crying getting shorter, it got longer.
And I wasn't up to the task....all 4 times that I tried.
After three nights of it getting worse, not better, I stopped.
I never once made it past 45 minutes.
I'm okay with this, but I wasn't at the time.
I tormented myself that I should try harder and that my inconsistencies would ruin his sleep habits forever.
He is now a great sleeper.
A solid 11 hours per night and usually a 2 hour nap after lunch.
Enter J.
I told myself that I wasn't going to get myself worked up over his sleep habits.
I let him nap when he wanted.
He had a routine instead of a schedule.
He slept like a dream until 4 months...then it all went to sh*t.
He is now waking every two hours, and my patience is dwindling.
I have been letting him cry just long enough to figure out that I don't jump to attention for his Majesty.
But his personality is so different than M's.
He is so much more expressive. You know when he means business.
Which is why again I am having a hard time with the whole CIO technique.
I would like to take that technique and shove it up the nostrils of the persons responsible for making Mamas feel like they have to do this to get their child to sleep.
I did it tonight to J. He cried maybe for 10 or 15 minutes while I shushed him and rubbed his back.
When he stopped and rolled on his tummy and closed his eyes, he did that weird, can't catch my breathe after crying so hard, thing.
It has been all I can think about all night. Poor babe.
It makes me feel like a crappy Mom.
Interestingly enough however, I am not alone.
I know his because I consulted my new magazine that just happened to have a feature on sleep.
Check out these statistics based on almost 1000 peeps with babies’ surveyed from Today’s Parent Mag:
• 53% of babies between 6 to 12 months wake most nights...woowza.
• 20% wake more than 3 times ...That's me folks.
• 53% tried controlled crying...Have you?
• 36% tried controlled crying before the recommended 6 months....I know someone who did it at 6 weeks with success.
• 43% who tried it started a round of it 4 or 5 times...that's me again.
• 80% of parents and experts make controlled crying sound easier and more foolproof than it is...Sooo true.
• 73% of parents rated it as stressful on the parents...really Sherlock?
• 63% rated it as stressful on the child. *crickets*
They concluded that in the cases that it didn't work it was due to the fact that the parents didn't believe in the technique, disagreed that they could actually control their child’s sleep habits, or had no support .
I fall into the first two of those explanations.
So why did I do it? Why am I trying it with J? To say that I did? Because it feels like the expectation? Because maybe it might only be 10 minutes of crying before he falls into a blissful sleep?
I have no clue.
I told myself I wasn't going to get wrapped up in this crap and here I go again.
And I know he will eventually sleep through the night, on his own, bunked in with his brother.
I know in my heart it will happen.
Eventually right?
Right????
Sleeping babies are probably the most beautiful things in the world...so peaceful.
*sigh*

What will he see?
In two (long) days Mr. Grounhound will make his much anticipated, yet somewhat groggy pilgrimage up from the depths of his warm hole in the ground.
I'm placing money on the chance that he will see his shadow.
And that he won't.
I really don't think it matters much what that little bug*er sees or doesn't see.
We always seem to get six more weeks of freaking cold.
And for some reason February is always the coldest and longest.
Ironic as it is the shortest month.
I think it is just the anticipation of March.
The promise of a hint of spring.
Mother Nature toying with our clothing choices.
What we really get is more snow.
A snowstorm that always seems to tornado it's way into town.
Leaving close to 14000 feet of snow in its wake.
Only to be replaced by the inevitable rain that melts away all of the white (read grey, black and stinky by this point) snow.
I love winter...
Can you tell that 2 days of -34 with the windchill is starting to grate on my nerves and that i am suffering from a small case of cabin fever?
I am however, thankful that you dropped by to have a read.
I'll leave you with a layout I did for my friend Lisa.
She was teaching a class at her LSS this weekend and asked me to create a layout based on her sketch.
It is a picture of M on the morning he became a big brother and some thoughts on how I was feeling that morning.

Hostage taking
It was a little over 15 years ago that technology started it's stronghold on me.
While in university I went on a ski trip to Sugar Loaf in Maine.
I was a crappy, crappy skier.
So bad in fact I still have broken capillaries on my thighs from the massive amount of bruising that I incurred to prove it.
Ski patrol had to take me down the mountain after a few short feet.
Totally embarrassment.
I ended up meeting some peeps while waiting for my shuttle to take my bruised butt home.
Back then I was a mouthy thing...now not so much.
I digress.
I stayed in touch with one of those guys for about a year and a half after that trip.
He introduced me to this chat room from some radio station.
I think it was the Boston Hot Tub or something?
I remember I would head to the computer lab on weekends so I could chat it up with this guy.
The computers were old and decrepit.
No scripts or pictures or anything.
Just this constant flow of comments being posted from anyone in that particular forum.
Not long after, I discovered an Internet Cafe downtown and discovered what the chat room and other websites were supposed to look like.
I was tickled.
it would be long after that though that I bought my first computer.
Seven years ago to be exact.
And even then I only used email and surfed Martha and some cooking websites.
I didn't jump on the Facebook phenomenon until M was a couple of months old.
I need something to occupy my time while I was at home and he was sleeping.
Enter Blog land.
Seriously?
A little over a year ago I stumbled across two of my friend’s blogs.
I started reading one night feeling ever so guilty for snooping in one their lives but I couldn't stop.
I told my sister about it and she was like "uhh duhh.....everyone reads blogs. I have one."
Excuse me? Where the heck have I been?
So I started reading hers and she gave me some awesome links. And by awesome, I mean I read everyday and sometimes go back into their archives for more reading pleasure.
It was shortly there after that I decided that I need my own. I looked at it as an extension to scrapbook.
To tell my story and that of my family when I didn't have time to sit down and create.
I'm sure by know you are wondering where I am going with this?
Two days ago we got a Virus.
I was without Internet, Email, Facebook, Google reader and Two Peas for an entire 24 hours.
A good friend of B's came over we ran our computer in safe mode and ran a restore function of our antivirus and sent that virus packing.
But not after a day of complete frustration that was misdirected several times.
I am thankful that I recognized my frustration and took some much needed timeouts for hugs but that virus lingered in my mind all. day. long.
I went to bed last night thinking that it was crazy that I let it get to me so much.
So crazy that after it was fixed I didn't even go on and have a quick read of anything.
So crazy that I knew today I had to make it better.
Today we paint.
Today we might break out the play dough
Today we do puzzles.
Today we build towers and Super Grover with Lego
Today we may break out the play dough.
Today we cuddle on the couch.
Today we read.
Today we pack everything fun into one rainy day.
Today I realize that I may not be able to let go of the internet but I sure as hell can make sure my kids know that they are my priority.

In an instant
I snapped.
On three separate occasions.
Maybe it was just fatigue,
maybe it was this damn cold that hasn't left our family for 8 days,
maybe it was that he just. wouldn't. listen.
How many times does he have to climb the entertainment unit in one day?
How many times does he have to shake the christmas tree?
Stand on the table?
Try to climb on the stove?
How many times do I have to say no before he gets that what he is doing is dangerous?
How many times do I have to tell him to stop pressing the open/close button on the DVD player?
How many times do I have to tell him it is time for a bath?
How many times do I have to tell him to lie still while I put his diaper on?
Apparently one zillion.
Or at least that is what it felt like.
And it all ended with my coming so close to being the parent that I have no desire to be.
And I wonder if in his little head he wonders why I raised my voice so much today.
If he thinks I don't love him.
That he doesn't love me.
This Mom thing is hard.
And I feel like a complete lump of terd right now.
For letting my temper get the best of me,
For forgeting that he is two.
For sending him to his room......twice.
For having to pin him down to get his diaper on.
I don't like myself very much right now.
But I don't doubt my love for that kid.
I whispered how much I loved him as I stroked his little head as he climbed into bed,
I told him tomorrow I would try harder to be the Mom he deserves to have.
One that is patient,
That explains things better,
That puts child locks on everything so he dosn't have the opportunity to climb...
The one that doesn't have to struggle with her child in order to put a stupid daiper and pair of pj's on.
Tomorrow I will try.
Because it can happen in an instant.
And I don't ever want to be that parent.

Just in case you are worried....
I am alive.
YIPPEE for being alive!!
We had a slight computer malfunction in which our monitor blew up.
Okay....it was me.
I blew it up.
Well maybe I didn't BLOW it up, but it spazzed out and died.
At the click of a mouse....by me.
But it could have happened to anyone really.
And it will be here that I officially appologize to my Mother for thinking/implying that perhaps she unknowingly downloaded a virus.
Sorry Mom.
eh hem.
Apparently it is/was cheaper to buy a new one then get the old one fixed.
I'm pretty stoked about that because our old monitor was 3x3x3.
No shit.
7 years ago I don't even want to tell you what we paid for it but it was WAY too much.
We now have a sleek and slim new on that takes up no space on my desk.
It does however blind me.
Frickin thing is sooooo bright.
So just in case you were wondering,
Or worried,
Or thought I had ditched you,
I'm here.
I'm alive!
P.S. What the hell did I do with my spare time before the internet? That was the LONGEST 5 days EVER!!!!!!
